However, here I drew her as a mermaid, but this has changed. I don’t want to bring in mermaid references because I think it will muddle her character. She should look mysterious and powerful enough to unsettle a pirate crew, but still beautiful enough to intrigue the Captain. This was why I had the idea of a mermaid to being with because they are beautiful, but still something to fear and if sailors saw a mermaid they would be scared and try to plug their ears as to not succumb to her song. The most obvious thing might be the cleavage, but i am writing a children’s book so that would not be possible regardless. My real peeve about this design, and most other female pirate designs, is the corset. The corset was used for women to appear more slender and was very in fashion at the time. However, the corset severely limits a person’s movement and breathing ability, thus I can’t understand why on earth a pirate would want to wear one. They are constantly either working on the ship or working on capturing other ships, wearing a corset would be violently impractical. Additionally, if she was a female pirate she would already be breaking gender conventions, since women weren’t supposed to be sailors, so then why would she choose to conform to this extremely This captures my original ideas about The Sea, I wanted the gradient hair and a sheer dress that faded into sea foam. I like the idea of the hair simulating the different colors of water, however I couldn’t find a good a nice way of illustrating this. Which led me to experiment with solid colour hair that changed colour depending on her mood, thus I get to incorporate the idea of her hair being like the ocean’s different colours, without it being a gradient. The dress here is very accurate to my vision, however, I am apprehensive about pursuing a design like this because drawing water or sea foam is difficult, and I worry that I won’t be able to replicate the drawing at a good enough quality. I am certain I would be able to draw it, but it would take a longer time to draw and I worry about spending that extra time, when this already is such a demanding project. I liked the idea of her having an accurate outfit that would tie her into the century of the story and other characters. However, I felt it make her look too pedestrian, she didn’t inspire the strength and authority I want her to emit. However, this variation did inspire the idea of giving her blue skin. The following three images are those tests. When I asked people which variation they liked the most, a lot of people said they liked this one. However, personally I am not a huge fan of this one. It is a pretty design and the monochromatic colour scheme is also nice, however, I feel like the white creates associations of ice and winter, not water. Additionally, having her white gives the impression that she is caucasian, which I didn’t want. I would rather that both of the character were ethnic, rather than one white and one colored. I have noticed that in media whenever they try to be diverse they always have a mixed race couple, once white and one (usually) black person. I personally feel that this is because people are scared to come across as “trying too hard” to represent. Which I find ridiculous. It is dark and mysterious like the ocean, however, it has been noted that the dark colours give people the impression that she’s evil. Which I can understand, but have elected to ignore. She can be dark and powerful, and still be kind. I also feel like the adding elements like the coral crown and working with her facial expression and body posture will help counteract the “evil” associations. That brings me to the last point, the coral crown. I stated that I wanted to avoid shells and seaweed as costume “props”, and that instead I wanted to explore coral as the lead ocean reference. I struggled with finding a natural way to incorporate something as structured as coral into a dress, without making it look like armor, which I didn’t want. However, coral is perfect as a crown. It’s branched structure and vibrant colours are great elements to use for a crown. As I have stated before, this is what I found the most challenging, mostly because I had envisioned her in the nude, but I felt that wasn’t suitable for a children’s book. Thus I started looking at what types of clothes I could give her. I had tried a western style outfit it the 2nd design, and I felt it didn’t give her the regality I wanted. So I started to look at some other countries’ clothing styles. The following three images, are inspired by Asian clothing, specifically indian, with some Chinese influences. But obviously there would be no under-boob in the final design. So I tried to draw her nude with the hair covering her, but it still doesn’t feel right. Once again she isn’t awe-inspiring enough. What I am trying to illustrate here water dripping of her body as a dress and then melting onto the floor, I also imagined that if her hair intersected with her dress it would drip down onto the floor. This was also another look at using a greener colour palette, which works better here than in some of my other experimentation, but I am still not sold on it. Many people have suggested using a “sea green” colour, because the ocean isn’t perfectly blue. Thus I tried a design in both of these colours. Firstly, the dress, I tried a new take on the second drawing a did. A more classic and period accurate look. Here I wanted it to feel like she had hitched up her dress to wade in the water, however, it did not translate that well and it still felt too pedestrian. Now, the colour. I personally like the blue because it illustrates a “perfect” view on the ocean. It is also a royal colour, harking back to the idea of royals having “blue blood”, which I feel is fitting since she is a sea goddess. The Queen of the Sea. Additionally, I want to make sure it is clear that she is the embodiment of the sea, and I feel that children will respond better to blue than green, because blue is the most common colour used to represent the ocean. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/55216c18e4b03e7ee27ff334/1542583418451-41O6RGP253Z86DTUPGJT/sea+5+green.jpg Design - Colour Pallette Test: Green This is the sea green variation of the previous dress. I think this colour palette is beautiful and it looks really cool. However, much like the white skin and hair combination I don’t think it reads as “ocean”. This could easily be mistaken for a forest design or something plant based. Which is not what I want. But even if it was understood as a “water reference” I feel like it reads more swampy or dirty, like kelp. Essentially I feel like it makes her feel more slimy and evil, which is not what I want for her. And for me personally it gives me "Nøkken” associations. Which is a character from a Scandinavian folk tales that lives in lakes and drowns people who come close. Is is too tight fitting and angular. I like the idea of pants, but I haven’t found a good way of doing it yet. I was largely inspired by The Mother from Studio Ghibli. I liked the idea of her being huge and controlling the sea during the storm when they meet. Thus, I added the water detail, this wasn’t that hard to draw, but, this isn’t detailed enough for the final product, so I will have to do more tests. I wanted to illustrate the water swirling around the dress, almost like a whirlpool. I also want the hair to be able to blend into the dress at certain times. The hair will be moving, but if it intersects with the dress it can be dragged into it, but then move out again later. I think this design is becomming better and better. I am not in love with it, but I think it has promise. The white part of the dress is shaded a little bit so that feels like running water, inspired by how white water turns when it runs fast enough, like in waterfalls. What I do like about this design is that it feels organic, but still looks like a dress. What I don’t like is that it is a highly detailed dress that is hard to replicate. Like in the original concepts I liked the idea of her hair mixing with her dress in a fluid way, something I further improved on in this drawing. This sketch gave me a very good idea of how I could work with the shapes of water to create this almost ethereal sea goddess. For her hair I was envisioning and trying to replicate the way water moves in zero gravity. As my previous concept was a big vague I decided to further investigate what pattern I liked. Here I imagined the rushing water dividing in the middle to reveal still clear water. Angry = Storm with dark crashing waves Sad = Dull murky waters Happy = Calm Sees with vibrant blues I am not sure how this will work in static image, but it would look great in animation. However, I do love that it gives me another object to emote with. What I enjoy here is the bird with the eye patch and the hat decorations. I will keep some hat decorations, but probably not these exact ones. I personally like this one, because yellow is almost the complimentary colour to blue (orange is the actual colour) she would be a nice contrast to The Sea, who is fully blue. However, it might also end up looking like Sweden, so this needs careful experimentation. For this design It feels to me liked she is dripped in gold. Which I really like, but yellow is also one of my favourite colours so I am likely biased. It is also important to note that none of these designs are with a coat on, these are the clothes under the coat. I do kinda want her to have a peg leg, but this design isn’t the greatest and I want to explore other peg leg design and if it doesn’t look nice, it is not hard to revert back to a normal leg. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/55216c18e4b03e7ee27ff334/1542583191179-TGJM4L2E98QJOYJJTJVQ/Captain+full+body+draft+3.jpg Design - Outfit 2 I do like this design as well, I can’t decided if it looks more expensive or not. My biggest worry here is that the undercoat has a lot of detail that will be covered by the actual coat, so for this design it all rests on how well it reads when she is wearing a coat. I do want to note though that I adore the huge buckle and I have used the same pants on both of the designs, because I absolutely love the high-waisted trouser with the split at the top, but I might explore different colours and patterns. The outfit is based on “Outfit 1”, but simplified. I was also curious to try another peg leg design. I think it is an OK design, I like the gold detailing on the leg, but my worry is that people won’t understand it is a peg leg. I am unsure about the leg. I do really like this colour combination of the teal and the brown, but I worry how it will look next to The Sea. Also the environment itself will have a lot of blue, so I did want to avoid blue tones in her outfit. What I really like about this outfit is the peg-leg, I think the curved shape is a good compromise between the very straight peg leg and the more modern prosthetic leg from the previous drawing. At this point I had finished the entire crew so I just could not procrastinate any longer. However, the outfit I was a bit more unsure about. I settled for this fairly clean and simple outfit. There isn’t too much going on, but it looks like it has quality to it. However, before i proceeded with the outfit I had drawn I decided to line her up with the rest of the crew to make sure she has the right authority compared to the rest of them, and I think she does. However, I kept this as an option, because I thought it might be a good contrast to The Sea’s ocean colours. I also started looking at burgundy, which i was a bit apprehensive about because it is a very common colour for pirate coats. This wasn’t super common for sailors at the time, but regardless I thought it added a fresh detail to it, which I liked. This colour palette is a rework of the previous design with the same base colours. The ruffles are are white to symbolize rushing water and I changed the skull brooch to red to tie back into her flag. I am still a bit unsure how I feel about this, but it is currently my leading design. My only real issue is that it might be a bit too flamboyant, because I wanted her to be a bit less glammed up and more down to earth, but she also needs to stand out. However, I do like the way it ties into The Sea’s design and compliments her sword, so currently I feel comfortable having this as my leading design. The brighter colour makes her stand out more, even when the drawing is shaded like the rest of the crew. This was to make sure that I kept her consistent throughout the book. With these I could copy and paste them into the project and draw over so that I knew she looked the same on every page. These two are based on sketch 14 and 13. Number 14 is growing on me and I have gotten a lot of good feedback about her. I feel she is almost good to go. I don’t have the leisure to spend crazy amounts of time on each character since I have to draw quite a lot of them. I will however, fix her hook hand, I don’t know if I want her to have a hook or not, but regardless it needs to look better than it does now. I do like the idea of her being Irish so I might incorporate the Irish flag colours into her design. Then other drawing is a very rough draft of number 13, here I was drawing with the idea of them being a woman, but now I like the idea of them being agender. However, the design isn’t very gendered so I could use this is a base to further the design. I do like the waistcoat they have and the baggy pants. I am basing this design on Turkish pirates and the clothing they wore. The idea I had for this character was for her to be in charge of the ropes on the ship. She isn’t really a fighter, but more of a carpenter and the one that maintains the ropes. Thus I wanted to incorporate knots and rope into her design, I think I can push this further, but I do quite like the more discrete reference. I also like the hitched skirt, because it gives the impression that she pulled up her skirt to wade in the water or to be able to move more freely. Personally I like nr. 1 and 5. the most. Number 4. could have potential, but It looks a little too much like a night gown. I prefer the plain yellow one because it makes her look like a ray of sunshine, which is what I imagine her personality is like. Number 5. is also ok, but I want to “save” the use of the colour red, because I suspect i will want to use it a lot for the other characters. I forgot to draw his beard, and I think he would look better with a beard. I do like his skin and hair and I think there is some potential here, but I am not sold on the outfit. I like that he feels like a generic pirate, but still diverse and representing people with vitiligo. His clothing will need to be reworked, the more I look at it the less I like, additionally i am not sure about the colour scheme. This is a furthering of the previous black and white sketch I did, which you can see above. They are strong and skilled, in their late 30s early 40s. A very respected member of the crew, next in line after the first mate. The design had a mix of a heavy embroidered overcoat and soft flowing fabrics and pants. This is a furthering of the previous black and white sketch I did, which you can see above. This girl is a classic pirate, just here to plunder and have fun. With Irish descent her red hair and light freckled skin has a tendency of getting sunburnt. Due to his heavy build and a series of random circumstances he ended up being recruited into the navy later found himself becomming a pirate. He really doesn’t mind though, it is more fun than his old life on a Dutch farm with his mother and father. His design is simple and clean, his shoes are inspired by modern boat shoes and his clothes are generally designed for comfort and ease. And to be generic enough to fit a man of his size (he ends up tearing up his shirts quite frequently). Her outfit is dark featuring red laces and straps the shirt is more tailored and angled like a lot of the traditional chinese clothing is. However, the main feature is the dark clothes and red accents, I chose this because she is the leader of the crew who decides to leave the Captain when she changes her ways. As a person she is a skilled swordsman, she grew up poor, on the streets and learnt to stalk the shadows and steal what she needed. Getting tired of her repetitive life she snuck aboard a ship hoping to be taken to somewhere she could start anew, on the journey the ship was raided by pirates, which she then joined and have been with every since. She is an un-trusting person, largely driven by greed and selfishness. But it was intimidating to start designing him, so I drew this as a “mood sketch” to get in the headspace of the character. He is an ex-naval officer from America. Here you see him getting dressed in the morning. He still uses some of his old navy clothes and is of the opinion that even if they are pirates it doesn’t mean they can’t consider personal hygiene. He likes rules and order, but after being abused by his superiors in the navy he seeked a liberated life as a pirate. Gold and treasures is a plus to him, he just loves sailing and the camaraderie of the crew. His design is clean and orderly with a more traditional feeling. He has always had a taste for finery and would rather spend his money on clothes than “companions” and drink. He was pretty lost before he joined the Captain’s crew, she took him in and gave him the chance to be his authentic self, he will always be grateful to her for that. His design is based on a painting of a 17th century musketeer. His outfit is opulent, but still functional. The pink and purple were normal colours for men to wear at that time, althout it reads as “feminine” in today’s society, I chose these colours to illustrate his “flamboyancy”, but also to show that a strong man can wear pink. Kaiken is an old japanese fisher who had traveled the world, but more importantly the seas. He knows all the oceans in and out. In his younger years he wanted to rebel against the government that was over taxing his fishing, so he joined a pirate crew and learned to fend for himself. But he still enjoys fishing. In his older years, he has grown bitter, uninterested in others and constantly complaining about how soft the younger generation has become. I made no changes to the design, but wanted to redraw it so it was in the same style as the other concepts. Same as with the Bosun I wanted to make the character match so that when I put them all together, they match. Grown up in the Caribbean isles he has always been surround by pirates, he isn’t particularly engaged in the pirate lifestyle it just feels like a fact of life. Whilst most pirates fight with swords, she fights with a gun. She is such a good shot, that someone tried to take her eye out to disable her good aim, but it didn’t matter. She’s still just as good a shot, even without an eye. Her design is based on the gun she uses, the shoulder armour is to help soften the kickback from the gun and the high boots are to guard her knees when she has to kneel to fire. Other than that the design is simple, she doesn’t care much for finery, but she loves to shoot. Ling, Dillion, Vanja and Kaiken are the members of the crew that are driven by greed and selfishness, so they were the best choice for the group that leaves. This with his barrel like build and wild hair made him one of the most feared pirates of all time. I envision him wearing very simple clothes, spending most his time fixing his hair instead of focusing on clothes. They are ragged and loose fitting like most pirate clothes are. So I decided to step a bit outside of “historic accuracy” and make choice that would make the character look more badass. His outfit is directly inspired by 17th century french fashion as I imagine someone as successful as Bartholomew would get real french fashion imported. I wanted him to feel rich and flamboyant and actively impractical. Because that overcoat would never be functional in combat, but he doesn’t care, he is rich and has the men and firepower to take out enemy ships without breaking a sweat. She always said she didn’t condone piracy so I imagine she would want to stay attached to her previous life. Illustrations of her usually show her wearing yellows and oranges, so I wanted to replicate that here. There is a mix of flowing clothes and functional armour. I chose a chest piece of scale mail which resembles fish scales, I felt this was fitting for a pirate who lives their life as sea. I debated giving her a traditional Chinese dress, but decided on pants since it seems more functional for someone as fierce as her.
